Video Call Lag

Lag = latency + jitter problem, not speed. Here's how to fix.

Video call lag — the delay between you speaking and the other side seeing/hearing — is almost never a speed problem. It's latency + jitter. A 5 Mbps connection with 20 ms latency feels instant; a 200 Mbps connection with 200 ms latency feels lagged.

Diagnose to identify whether the latency lives in your Wi-Fi, your mobile signal, your DNS, or upstream.

What this measures

  • Latency
  • Jitter
  • Sustained upload (the bottleneck for video)

How it works

  1. Test
  2. Identify dominant cause
  3. Targeted fix

Why this matters

'Get more speed' is the wrong fix when lag is the symptom. Lower latency is the right one.

Top fixes

  • DNS to 1.1.1.1 (saves 50+ ms commonly)
  • Wired ethernet (saves 5-15 ms)
  • 5 GHz Wi-Fi (saves jitter)

FAQs

Will faster plan fix video call lag?

No, usually. Lag is about latency, not bandwidth. Above ~3 Mbps upload, more speed doesn't help video calls.

Why is the other side delayed but I'm fine?

Their connection has the lag, not yours. They should also run diagnose.
