High Ping Fix

Ping over 100 ms? Five fixes — diagnose first, then act.

High ping ruins everything interactive — gaming feels laggy, video calls have a delay, even browsing feels sluggish. Speed doesn't help; you can have 500 Mbps and high ping at the same time. The fixes are different from speed fixes.

Below are the five most effective ping reductions, ordered from easiest to hardest. The diagnosis tells you which to try first based on YOUR setup.

What this measures

  • Idle ping to nearest probe
  • Ping under load (catches bufferbloat-caused 'high ping')
  • DNS resolution time (slow DNS feels like high ping)
  • Wi-Fi vs predicted wired ping (estimates the Wi-Fi tax)

How it works

  1. Measure current ping
  2. Test under load to see if ping spikes (bufferbloat)
  3. Recommend the highest-impact fix for your specific case

Why this matters

Most 'high ping' advice on the internet is generic ('use ethernet, change DNS'). It usually works but you don't know WHY it worked or which fix mattered. Signalyzr identifies the specific cause so the fix sticks.

Top fixes

  • First: change DNS to Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 — five-minute test, huge if DNS was the problem
  • Next: try ethernet temporarily — confirms whether Wi-Fi is the culprit
  • Next: switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi band — usually has lower contention than 2.4 GHz
  • On gaming laptops: Wi-Fi power-saving — disable in advanced adapter properties (Windows)
  • On mobile: weak signal = high ping. Move to a window or use Wi-Fi calling
  • If traceroute shows bad ISP routing: complaint with traceroute screenshot

FAQs

What's a good ping for gaming?

Under 50 ms is competitive-grade. Under 30 ms is excellent. Above 80 ms most fast-paced games feel sluggish. Above 150 ms is unplayable.

Will gaming router lower my ping?

Marginally. 'Gaming routers' mostly help with bufferbloat (QoS / SQM) — if your ping spikes during downloads, yes. If your ping is consistently high, no router will fix it; the issue is upstream.

Why does my ping spike at certain hours?

ISP peak-hour congestion. Indian ISPs typically degrade between 8–11 PM in urban areas. Test at 6 AM to see your 'true' ping; if it's much better, the rest is ISP-side.

Does VPN help with ping?

Sometimes. If your ISP routes badly to the game server, a VPN exit closer to the server can reduce ping. Usually it adds ping though. Test both ways.
