Jitter Test

Jitter is why your call freezes when ping looks fine. Find yours.

Jitter is the variance between consecutive ping measurements. A connection with 50 ms ping but 0 ms jitter feels stable. A connection with 30 ms ping but 40 ms jitter feels broken — voice calls cut, video frames drop, screen shares freeze.

Voice and video apps buffer a small amount of audio/video to smooth over normal network variance. When jitter exceeds the buffer size (usually ~30 ms), the app runs dry and you see a freeze, drop, or robotic voice.

What this measures

  • 15 ping probes — same data the ping test uses, but aggregated as variance
  • Standard deviation of pings (the technical definition of jitter)
  • Max minus median — the 'worst-case' jitter that breaks calls
  • Pattern detection — is jitter constant or bursty?

How it works

  1. Probe to the nearest server (Mumbai or Delhi NCR)
  2. Collect 15 latency samples over 3 seconds
  3. Compute median, max, min, std deviation of the samples
  4. Classify as low / moderate / problematic for VoIP

Why this matters

Jitter is the single most under-diagnosed network problem. Speedtest.net doesn't show it prominently. Most users see 'good ping, good speed' and conclude their connection is fine — but their calls keep freezing. Jitter is usually the answer.

Top fixes

  • Wi-Fi interference is the #1 cause — try 5 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz
  • Other devices on your Wi-Fi can starve voice traffic — pause big downloads
  • Mesh repeaters often add jitter — try a single-router setup
  • On mobile: weak signal = high jitter. Move closer to a window
  • ISP-side jitter (peak hours) — retest at 6 AM to confirm

FAQs

What is the difference between jitter and ping?

Ping is the average response time. Jitter is the variance — how much each ping differs from the average. You can have low ping AND high jitter, which feels broken to your apps even though the average looks good.

How much jitter is acceptable?

For voice calls: under 10 ms. For video calls: under 15 ms. For gaming: under 5 ms. Above 30 ms you'll notice quality breaks even if speed and ping are otherwise fine.

Why is jitter high on my Wi-Fi but low on cable?

Wi-Fi is a shared radio medium — every device fighting for airtime adds jitter. Wired ethernet has consistent timing. If your jitter is bad on Wi-Fi but fine on ethernet, the fix is Wi-Fi-side (channel change, 5 GHz, less interference).

Can VPN cause high jitter?

Yes, sometimes. VPNs add a hop and a re-encryption step that can introduce variance, especially if the VPN exit node is overloaded. Try disabling VPN temporarily to compare.
