Jitter is the variation in your latency (ping) from one moment to the next. If packets arrive 20 ms, 22 ms, 19 ms apart, jitter is low and calls sound smooth. If they arrive 20 ms, 180 ms, 40 ms, 200 ms, jitter is high and audio/video stutters.
Imagine a steady drumbeat versus a drummer who keeps speeding up and slowing down — even at the same average tempo, the uneven one is unusable for a band. Real-time apps need steady timing, not just a low average.
Jitter is why a connection with a 'good' average ping can still make WhatsApp, Zoom or Google Meet calls robotic or choppy.
Jitter — not raw speed — is the top cause of choppy, robotic or dropping voice and video calls. Buffers can hide a little jitter, but past ~30 ms it becomes audible, and it is common on congested Indian 4G and shared Wi-Fi.
Under 15 ms is good for calls and gaming; under 30 ms is usually acceptable. Above 30 ms you will hear choppy or robotic audio and see video freezes.
Ping is the average round-trip delay; jitter is how much that delay varies. You can have a low ping but high jitter — and it is the jitter that breaks calls.
Wi-Fi shares the air with other devices and interference, so timing varies more. A cable gives each packet a steady path, which is why wired jitter is usually near zero.
