Router Not Working?

Diagnose first — router fixes are different from modem fixes.

When 'the router isn't working', the actual fault is often elsewhere — modem hung, ISP out, DNS broken. Replacing the router when the modem was the problem wastes ₹3-8k.

Diagnose first. If router is truly the cause (Wi-Fi side is broken, wired works fine), the fixes are: factory reset, firmware update, or replacement.

What this measures

  • Wi-Fi side: can we connect?
  • Wired side: does ethernet work?
  • Wi-Fi vs wired comparison reveals if router is the issue

How it works

  1. Test on Wi-Fi
  2. Test on wired (if possible)
  3. If Wi-Fi broken + wired fine → router is the cause

Why this matters

A 'broken router' might actually be a hung modem, a captive portal, or an ISP issue. Diagnose before you buy.

Top fixes

  • Power-cycle: unplug 30 sec → plug back
  • Factory reset: hold reset button 10 sec while powered
  • Firmware update: check router admin
  • Replace if all else fails (Wi-Fi 6 from ₹4k)

FAQs

How long do routers last?

5-7 years typically. Older routers often can't keep up with modern speeds and 5 GHz Wi-Fi.

Factory reset or just restart?

Start with restart. If issue persists, factory reset (you'll need to reconfigure).
