Internet keeps disconnecting

Every 5 minutes. Every hour. Diagnose the pattern — that's the clue.

Frequent disconnections — every few minutes or hours, then comes back — usually point to one of: Wi-Fi flapping (weak signal at the edge), overheating modem/router (afternoon disconnects), unstable ISP backhaul, DHCP lease expiry, or a phone-side power-save kicking in.

Pattern is the diagnostic. If it's every 30 minutes exactly — that's a DHCP lease. If it's afternoons only — overheating. If random — Wi-Fi.

What this measures

  • Connection stability over a 60-second test
  • Detect any reconnection events during diagnose

How it works

  1. Note WHEN it disconnects (time-of-day, after how long, anything in common)
  2. Run diagnose to see current state
  3. Match pattern to cause

Why this matters

Generic 'restart router' doesn't fix a heat issue — but moving the router off the cabinet does. Pattern-matching saves hours.

Top fixes

  • Cool the modem — move off carpet, off bookshelf, give it air
  • Set DHCP lease to 24h in router admin
  • Wi-Fi drops: 5 GHz + channel change

FAQs

Why does my Wi-Fi disconnect every few minutes?

Most common: weak signal causing client roaming, or DHCP lease too short. Both fixable in router settings.

Why only in the afternoon?

Heat. Modem or router overheating. Improve ventilation, off carpet, away from sun.
