Echo During Call

Device, or network? Diagnose to distinguish.

Echo on calls usually has a device cause (your speaker is being picked up by your mic, looping your voice back to the other side after a delay). But network jitter and packet loss can also create echo-like artifacts via codec mishandling.

Easy test: do BOTH sides hear an echo? If only one, it's the OTHER side's device. If both, network.

What this measures

  • Latency (large latency makes echo more noticeable)
  • Jitter (intermittent echo)

How it works

  1. Identify whether echo is on your end or theirs
  2. If network: measure latency + jitter
  3. Fix

Why this matters

Echo fix is wildly different depending on cause. Headphones fix device echo; not network echo.

Top fixes

  • Wear headphones (kills 90% of device echo)
  • Mute when not speaking
  • If network-caused: reduce latency

FAQs

Will headphones fix all echo?

Yes for device-caused echo. No for network-caused. Most echo is device.

Why do echo problems get worse over time?

Sometimes — codecs adapt. Hang up and rejoin can reset the codec state.
